Coping with cancer

Most women experience at least some psychosocial distress during the course of their breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Fears of women during breast cancer experience

  • Fear of recurrence(return of the disease)
  • Physical symptoms such as fatigue, trouble sleeping, or pain,
  • Body image and disfigurement
  • Sexual problems
  • Treatment-related anxieties
  • Marital/partner communication
  • Feelings of vulnerability
  • Concerns regarding death.

PSYCHOSOCIAL NEEDS OF WOMEN BY PHASE OF CARE

  • During diagnosis:

Many patients fear discovering if they have cancer or not and usually don’t seek medical advice, so we have to reassure and points out fear of the unknown won’t change reality and starting to act upon the disease will give better results,  rather than waiting till it reaches a late stage.

It’s very important to emphasize the fact that breast cancer is a not a death sentence, and is a treatable, curable disease.

We also have to discuss treatment options with the patient and reassure them.

  • During surgery

Most women fear losing their breast which is an icon of their feminine nature, so we have to assure them in every possible way that it wouldn’t affect their shape and that they always look beautiful in every way.

We have to discuss surgery options with the patient and explain that in most cases we don’t have to remove the whole breast but instead we only remove the tumor.

In case of only removing the tumor, we can go for implants preserving the normal, usual shape of the breast

In case of the whole breast removal, we can also go for breast reconstruction surgery preserving the normal breast shape.

  • During treatment:

Patients experience a lot of physical symptoms during the treatment course as fatigue, nausea vomiting and diarrhea, and loss of appetite.

We have to give patients  good nutrition and support them all the way as pamper them with sweet words and how they still look beautiful even when they've lost weight or looking pale.

We should encourage them to practice sports and have activities and practice their hobbies.
